Science Fair
The Mitchell School Science Fair will take place this Tuesday 5:30-7:00 pm.  Students should bring their projects to school on Tuesday morning. 

Spring Break
Spring Break begins Friday, March 29th.  There is no school on Friday.  

Week of March 18th

Report Cards
Your child's report card will come home Monday afternoon.  Check their backpack to learn about all the progress each of your children is making in 2nd grade!

Silent Auction
The Mitchell-Scarlett Silent Auction will take place this Friday, March 22 at 6:00.  Come on out and bid to support our PTO and the Scarlett-Mitchell students.  We have been working on our own auction item.  Check back later this week for a sneak peek!

826 Michigan
We had a great trip to 826 Michigan last Friday.  We learned about all the parts of a story and used our imaginations to create a story that even Dr. Blotch would accept!  Thank you to the amazing staff of 826 for making this a memorable trip for us.

Week of March 11th

Field Trip to 826 Michigan
This Friday, March 15th we will be visiting 826 Michigan in downtown Ann Arbor.  You may better know the building as the Robot Supply Store.  This field trip focuses on writing.  The talented staff at 826 will help the students develop an original story, then each student will write their own ending.  Permission slips will go home on Tuesday afternoon.  Please return permission slips promptly.

Welcome Back!
You'll notice from our schedule that we are beginning some new units and continuing with other learning.  In Math we will begin learning about fractions, while in Writing we will begin learning to write biographies.  We will continue our study of biographies during Reading Workshop and Social Studies, as well as getting ready to build our instruments in science.

Your child has made a plan for the instrument s/he would like to build.  Please help your child collect the materials they will need from your recycling bin such as cereal boxes, paper towel tubes, or other containers.

Yearbook Orders
If you would like to order a school yearbook please complete the order form and return by Wednesday February 27th.  Order forms will be sent home Monday afternoon.

We had a great time on our winter woods hike and learned a lot about how animals survive the cold.  We even had a chance to try to design a home to insulate an "animal" and then see how well it survived the cold.  The good news is that everyone designed a home warm enough and all our "animals" survived!  The picture above shows us celebrating a job well done!

Week of February 11

NAAPID
Please join us for NAAPID on Monday January 11th.  We would love to have you involved in our classroom for the day or even a few minutes, whatever works best for you!

Count Day
Count Day is Wednesday January 13th.  Please help to ensure your child is in school on this day so we can have an accurate count of the number of students at Mitchell School.

Valentine's Day
We will have a celebration of friendship in our classroom on Thursday afternoon, February 14th.  Students may bring valentine's for their classmates.  If you would like to donate a snack it would be greatly appreciated.

Winter Break
Winter Break begins at the end of the day on Friday.  School resumes Monday, February 25th.  Have a safe, fun vacation with your family and friends!

Jiffy Mix

We had a great time on our field trip to Jiffy Mix.  After enjoying a snack and a video presentation of how Jiffy Mix is made, we took a tour of the factory.  We saw machines making and then filling boxes, conveyor belts transporting the finished product to the warehouse, and we even got to look at the Jiffy Mix truck up close!  Thank you to the parents who were able to attend this trip and a big thank you to Jiffy Mix for providing this opportunity for our students!

Week of February 4th

Jiffy Mix
Our field trip to Jiffy Mix is this Wednesday, February 6th.  We will leave school at 12:30 and return at 2:30.  Students will have lunch at school before we leave.  Please make sure your child has returned their permission slip.

Building Instruments
We are getting ready to take all that we have learned about sound to help us design and build musical instruments.  Each child will make an instrument in our classroom.  For this project to be a success we need donations of paper towel tubes, boxes, plastic tubs, oatmeal containers, and anything else that could be used to make an instrument.

Valentine's Day
On Thursday, February 14th we will have a celebration of friendship in our classroom.  Your child may choose to bring Valentine's for their classmates.  Check your child's take home folder for a list of the names of the children in our classroom.
