Thanks to Dr. Sood and the nurses and staff at St. Joe's for sharing their knowledge about our hearts and lungs and how to keep them healthy!

Week of October 12th

Greetings Families!
What a beautiful Fall weekend!  I hope you got a chance to get out and enjoy the warm temperatures and changing colors.  Makes me look forward to Storer Camp even more!

Camp Health Forms
Health forms are required for students to attend camp (October 26-28).  These forms need to be submitted to the Camp Storer health staff two weeks prior to our trip.  Please make every effort to have them returned to us by Monday, October 12th.  If you feel this might be difficult, please let us know.  A visit to your child's doctor is usually not necessary to complete these forms.  Also, if your child has asthma, anaphylaxis, or diabetes, there are additional forms that will need to be completed.  We'll try to make sure you have all the forms you need, but if you need a specific form, they are available for download on the Camp site, or we can send them home with your child.  Just let us know.

Healthy Hearts Field Trip

Fifth graders will be spending Tuesday morning at St. Joe's Michigan Heart & Vascular Institute, learning about the effects of lifestyle choices on their long-term health.  We'll begin our visit with a presentation by Dr. Sood, a cardiothoracic surgeon at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.  Students will then rotate in small groups through a number of stations where they will have the opportunity to handle pig lungs (which are similar to human lungs), use an AED, see the effects of smoking on lungs, and use a stethoscope to listen to their hearts.  WE NEED SEVEN PARENT VOLUNTEERS TO HELP!  If you are available until around noon on Tuesday, please consider joining us.  This very well could be one of the most important experiences of your children's lives.  It hopefully will lead to some very wise decisions about healthy lifestyle choices.  Please be a part of it, whether you join us as a small group chaperone, or discuss what they learned afterwards.

 Parent Teacher Student Conferences
The first evening of Parent Teacher Student conferences is this Tues. October 13th.  If for some reason you are no longer able to attend at your child's scheduled conference time, please be courteous and contact me prior to your conference time to reschedule at a time that is more convenient for you. These conferences are student led, please have your child attend with you!

Parent Writing Workshop
Dear Mitchell Parents,

Ever wondered how to best help your child be a better writer? We have an opportunity for you! We've partnered with EMU to bring a Parent Writing Workshop to our school community! The dates are: Thursday November 5th at Mitchell and Tuesday November 10th at the Arbor Meadows Clubhouse (with Spanish translation). Both sessions start at 6:00pm - pick the one that works best for you. This workshop provides parents tips on how to help their child at home with writing.

Sign up information will come home soon. We hope to see you there!
