-Fun Run T-Shirts
Students will be decorating their own t-shirts for this year's Fun Run. Unless you have sent back the form requesting that the PTO supply your child with a t-shirt, please send in a plain white t-shirt by April 15th.
-M-STEP Testing
When we return from Spring Break, 5th grade students will begin the MSTEP test. The MSTEP test replaces the old MEAP test and is required by the State of Michigan for all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade
students. If you have questions please contact Mr. Hilton or Mr. Karr at 997-1216.
-Mariachi Vargas
We are excited to announce that we are taking an all-school field trip to the University of Michigan to see Mariachi Vargas on April 1, 2016! Permission slips have gone home with your child. We would like to invite two parent-chaperones per class, so please communicate with your child’s teacher if you are interested in attending the concert.
When we return to Mitchell after the concert, student volunteers from the University of Michigan will visit classrooms for an interactive read-aloud event with bilingual Spanish and English books honoring the life and legacy of Cesar E. Chavez, a labor and human rights activist who co-founded with Dolores Huerta the United Farm Workers of America—UFW. We invite all parents to join us and participate in this interactive read-aloud time in their child’s classroom, which will begin at 1pm.
Through the concert and reading event, we aim to expand our knowledge of Mexican American culture and history. We welcome all families to learn with us and contribute to deepening our connections between Mitchell School and our communities.

Sharing Our Planet-Public Service Announcements
As a result of our last IB Unit of Sharing the Planet--students were drawn to take action by creating public service announcements in the classroom as well as sharing out their ideas on ways to take care of our planet under #startwith1thing.
Early African Trade
Trade in Early Africa started as a result of the abundant natural resources of salt and gold. In the video below students are simulating the salt trade by exchanging salt for gold in a silent barter while being taxed for their goods as they enter Ghana on their way from the salt mine to meet the gold traders.
Week of March 14th
We have embarked upon our 2nd IB Unit of Inquiry!
Where We Are in Place and Time.
This is an inquiry into the orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys' the discoveries, explorations, and migrations of humankind; the relationships between and the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives.
Central Idea
Groups of people change over time and interactions between groups are impacted by change and the world around them.
Lines of Inquiry:
- People change over time.
- People see their place in the world.
- People see their place in their family and community.
This unit is situated within the context of Early African History, European Explorations, and Indigenous peoples of America.
Mariachi Vargas- April 1
All students at Mitchell School will attend a concert by Mariachi Vargas, at Hill Auditorium at the University of Michigan. Please watch for a permission slip to come home soon. All children will need a sack lunch that day--sack lunches can be brought from home or ordered through the school cafeteria. I will take a count of sack lunches to be ordered closer to the date of the trip. If you would like to join your child on this trip please contact me. Our tickets are limited to two parents per classroom.
M-Step
Mitchell 5th graders will begin taking the M-Step assessment the week after Spring Break. We will be working in the classroom to familiarize ourselves with the kinds of questions students will be asked, as well as important test taking strategies, and tips for using technology within the assessment. If your child would like to practice at home there are resources linked below that have been provided by the Michigan Department of Education.
