Week of February 27th

Good Morning Families,

This week promises to be full of inquiry and learning!  We have just begun our adventure with IB PYP Exhibition. This is the culminating inquiry experience for students as they transition from the Primary Years Programme to the Middle Years Programme.  Look for a parent letter to come home this week.

On Tuesday, March 21 we are taking a field trip to Google.  I'm looking forward to the trip and I know the kids are too!  Google requires that parents sign a Waiver and Release for Liability Form for students to attend this trip.  This form will come home stapled to the permission slip.  Students must have both forms signed to attend the trip.

Wednesday 3/8/17 is an early release day.  Students will be dismissed at 11:53 a.m.

Week of February 6th

HOT CHOCOLATE SALES
In the past we have found that offering hot chocolate for sale at lunchtimes on Fridays has been a reliable and consistent way of raising funds for our Camp Storer trip.  For this to happen we need one or two parent volunteers to run the sale.  Responsibilities would include:

  • preparing the hot chocolate
  • setting up the cash box (we'll provide startup $)
  • running the sale (usually in the lobby as students come in from lunch recess)
  • cleaning up afterward
In the past we have held these sales on Fridays, but if you're interested in helping out and another day would work better for you, that would be fine.  With setup and cleanup, the responsibilities would typically last from 11:45 to about 1:15.  Fifth grade students are eager to help and will make this task much easier!

WINTER SURVIVAL TRIP FRIDAY!
Friday, February 10, 9:30 - 2:30
On Friday the fifth graders will be spending a day in the woods, working in small groups to build cooking fires and cook their own lunch. A letter and permission form was sent home last week for your signature. The letter contains information about dressing for the weather and making food choices.

INTERNATIONAL NIGHT FRIDAY!
February 10th, 5:30 - 8:00pm

This is a free event to all Mitchell School families.

We will kick off the evening at 5:30 with a German Laternenumzug, a celebration with lanterns. The main event will be from 6-8 p.m. We are inviting you to celebrate diversity by sampling delicacies from around the world. We will also have artifact tables set up so we can learn about the countries around us and craft tables which will include henna artist, origami, your name written in many different languages, and much more!! Finally, we will have performances including:
  • Arabic Debka
  • Capoeira
  • Sinaboro Korean Drumming
  • Congolese Dance and Drumming
  • And much more!!!!
We invite Mitchell families to wear traditional clothing from any country, culture, heritage or a team jersey. Please no Halloween costume attire.

We look forward to celebrating the diversity that makes our school so special! Please email shereensukkar@gmail.com if you would like to contribute, volunteer, or have questions.

Additionally, Mitchell students will be creating some items in Art class based on their heritage. Please discuss your child's unique heritage with him/her in the coming weeks. It will be amazing to see the multitude of backgrounds of Mitchell School families displayed during International Night.

NAAPID
Monday, February 13
Next Monday is NAAPID (National African American Parent Involvement Day)!  ALL PARENTS are invited to come spend as much of the day as you like with your child here at school.  There will be an all-school assembly at 2:45.  You might also like to eat lunch with your child, go to a special area class (Music is on Mondays).
